Bath Safety

How to Improve the Safety of Your Bathroom While Maintaining Beautiful Design.

January is Bath Safety Month.  Bath Safety is not just for older adults, it’s for all ages.  If you really think about it, how much time do you spend in the bathroom?  It’s a room we use every day.  For many, it’s where we start and finish our day. Plus, it’s a room where water meets surface = the possibility of slips and falls.  So why would do so many of us immediately think bath safety is only for older adults?  Or why is there a stigma with the term “grab bar” and when it is brought up to clients they immediately respond with “I’m not that old!  I don’t need that.”  Is it because we see the “grab bar” as a indicator that we are failing or a symbol that we are aging and we are soon to fail?  Or is it because we have this image in our head of the cold looking institutional grab bar that we have associated with hospitals and the image that “someone old live here.” And to be honest, who really wants their home environment to look and feel like that?

There have been many different phrases in the past few years to “rebrand” the grab bar from assist bar, support bar to safety bar.  When I first started to work with clients as an occupational therapist, I used the term assist bar and most people gave me a confused look so I ended up reverting back to the term grab bar.  Now I continue with that term and provide additional education and visual examples of how the grab bar has evolved over the years and how many more options are available to keep my clients safe and also maintain the beauty and feel of their home.

Goodbye institutional grab bar…

Say “hello” to the next generation of grab bars that offer safety & style!
